This is the final effect used to illustrate our relationship with God.  It started off perfect, sin entered the world through Adam & Eve, we have this obstacle in the way, and Jesus is the only way to get to heaven.

How God views sin -
3 unequal ropes represent different levels of sin, that is, how we view some sins to be worse than others.  The ropes are made to be the same length - talking about the actual sin nature that we are born into that has separated us from God, and this trick leads into the message of Christ's work on Calvary to free us from this bondage.
